Weekenders Weekly 002
Pop-ups, Procore, and more!
Welcome back, Weekend Warriors!
This week at Weekenders Weekly is full of product announcements, a New York staple, and one of the craziest golfing stories you’ll ever hear.
I hope you enjoy!
Eastside Comes to Town!
Eastside Golf, one of the dopest and fastest growing golf brands out right now, recently held a three day pop-up in SOHO, NYC, and it was a rousing success. Weekenders Weekly was on the ground all three days, at the beginning and at the close, and the write up on the store is out now. They also unveiled their new Nike collaboration for the first time. Malbon’s Newest
Malbon Golf has released their newest fall collection for 2024, featuring a lot of Autumn notes meant to call to the Pacific Northwest. The collection can be found now in-store and at malbongolf.com.
Weekly Advisors
This week’s tip is devoted to chipping again. Last week had a lot to do with the tempo and the length of your swing, as well as the weight distribution. To continue to help your chipping become a strength, I want to use this week to give a tip to those who may just be starting out, and for those who know this one already, let it serve as a reminder. The big secret to chipping, and the one thing most new players struggle with, is the idea that hitting down on the ball will lift the ball up, similar to the irons. You don’t have to master your grind and bounce, and once again, the mental game is one of the most important facets here. It is one thing to know that the club moving downward will prop the ball up, but another to absolutely trust 100% that this will be true. Embracing this fact is the most important step in ensuring that your ball striking with your chipping is consistent. Know deep down that the downward, brushing moment of a wedge sliding under a ball will push it up, and you will have a much more confident swing.
Stories from the Sticks
I’d like to talk about a few topics of note.
The PGA Tour just kicked off it’s Fedex Cup Fall, with Patton Kizzire winning the Procore Championship
Jon Rahm won the LIV Golf individual season title with a win at the finale even after a subpar season
Good Good drops their athletic wear today, which will serve as a test of the brand’s strength and the level of demand in this market
Eastside Golf had a successful pop-up store in NYC that showcased their products and values to people in a physical stage
A reminder from last week’s section to never let a bad mood get the best of your game, and that a level head will always prevail.
Course of the Week
This week’s course is Douglaston golf courses local favorite out in Queens. Although some courses in the five boroughs are a bit easier to get to, this one usually always kept up well with fun holes and lots of elevation. Expect a lot of par 3’s over hazards, like ponds or brush, raised greens, blind tee shots, and more that make this unassuming track play to a bit of a higher level than one would think at first glance. Not to mention that the greens here are some of the greenest and firmest I have seen at any course in New York City, at least for a muni. The people are nice, and it is pretty easy to get a tee time as long as you book a few days out. Expect busy weekends, but then again, if your Saturday or Sunday round is less than five hours, you’re definitely not playing at an NYC public golf course.
Stupid Golf Story of the Week
I’m going to throw it back to summer of 2020 for this one when I had the pleasure of playing a round at beautiful course in Woodloch Springs, Pennsylvania. One of the holes had the fairway split into two levels, with one half of the fairway coming to a a steep hill, the other half about 150 yards down the hill. Although the hill was grassy and wide, all carts were mandated to the path on the left, cut off by a line of large rocks. About 15 minutes after playing this hole, standing on the green of another, I happen to look back and see a twosome try and drive straight down the grass rather than the path. About halfway down, the cart did a complete 180, and then cut 90 degrees, driving backwards, and slammed into the rocks with a crash so loud I thought the cart exploded. We rushed over to find the cart completely intact, along with the somehow uninjured occupants, where we promptly helped them reverse the cart out of the, once again, quite large rocks. Somehow completely unscathed, they continued their round, as did we, stopping by again after we both finished to drop off an iced bag of Budweisers. Moral of the story; be a Good Samaritan. There might be some beer on the other side.
I hope you enjoyed this edition of Weekenders Weekly! Next edition, we will be announcing the winner of the Malbon Golf ball marker on the newsletter and the Weekenders Weekly Instagram page. Interviews, on course content, and more giveaways are coming soon, so stay tuned, and go play some golf!
