Weekenders Weekly 003
Let's go to Queens, the Bronx, and Montreal!
Welcome back, Weekend Warriors!
This week at Weekenders Weekly, we’re bringing you a full throttle review of a classic NYC course, Forest Park Golf Course. There’s also new Malbon announcements, and a Presidents Cup overview to get you ready for this years event.
I hope you enjoy!
Forest Park
I had the pleasure of playing at Forest Park Golf Course last Friday, a unique experience from the subway station to the 18th green. My article on the course and my time there releases alongside this newsletter, so be sure to check it out here.
Malbon x Beams
Malbon and Beams Golf have teamed up to make a very New York City inspired collection, 9 street-ready hats and t-shirts that are inspired by the style of the Bronx and their beloved baseball team. The collection is out now, and you can find it here.
Presidents Cup
The little brother to the historic Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup is a team event held between the United States and an International team. This gives top players who do not hail from Europe or the U.S. the chance to compete on a worldwide team stage. Similar to the Ryder Cup, it has alternating best ball and alternate shot formats, and singles matches all day on Sunday. With top talent on both sides, expect fiery, competitive matches between some of the world’s best. Players to look for include the obvious, like Scottie and Xander, but expect to see some standout play from Min Woo Lee and Tom Kim, the latter who played exceptional in the last Presidents Cup two years ago. This year’s tournament will be held at Royal Montreal, perfect for Canadian International team captain Mike Weir, and the Internationals will be looking to use this home course advantage to the best of their ability. Since its inception in 1994, the International team has only won one single event. This may be their best shot in years, so let’s see how they fare when play starts on Thursday.
Weekly Advisors
Although I had a great time playing last Friday, it was also my worst round of golf in the last six months. While my swing was definitely far from perfect, I did have no glove, and a quite dismal set of rental clubs. That aside, from the moment I gripped the driver on the first tee, I knew that I would not be playing with my best stuff. Luckily, I am prepared for days like this. Firstly, my expectation heading into the round was already very loose; all I wanted was to enjoy myself and shoot 90 or lower. This took a lot of the pressure off even when I realized that in itself would be a challenge. I had to go back to basics, and I tried to play the most basic, boring golf of all time. I only hit stock shots, I took a club up for every shot and swung slow, I played conservative chips and didn’t try to hole every putt. While a round like this is unfortunate, it is also unavoidable for every golfer. Some days, we just don’t have it in us. It’s good to have a game plan in the back of your head for these days, a mental and physical set of rules to fall back on that will make a round where you have no feel, feel a little more comfortable.
Course of the Week
The course of this week, obviously, goes to Forest Park. Read the write up here.
Stories from the Sticks
This week, I just want to give a huge shoutout to Eastside Golf, who you’ve seen me covering a lot recently. I have been following these guys and their vision for five years now, and to see how far they’ve come in that short time is nothing short of inspirational. I highly recommend checking them out, their lifestyle and on course products both are some of the best in the game. And no one else does Jordan’s like them. Check them out here.
Stupid Golf Story of the Week
This one has to go to me, unfortunately, for my antics on the first tee box this past Friday. The course only has white tees and blue tees, and I went to play the blue tees as I usually did, even though my playing partners looked at me questioningly and asked if I was really about to play the back tees. My friend James destroyed a driver down the fairway, which only upped my confidence. That is, until I shanked two drives in a row into the adjacent fairway. I left the balls there to rest, dropped with James, and played the white tees the rest of the day. And I was all the more happy for it. Don’t be stupid like me and try and make the game harder, especially when you don’t have your best stuff. Just drop the ego, and enjoy the day.
