Weekenders Weekly 009

Welcome back, Weekend Warriors!

This week, the PGA Tour returns with the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico! Who doesn’t like resort golf? We also had the Eastside Collegiate Invitational take place over the weekend, giving HBCU’s the opportunity to perform on an elevated stage and a tournament level golf course. And, today marks the release of the first ever Weekenders Weekly interview with influencer Kevin Kim!

I hope you enjoy!

Kevin Kim

Kevin is not just an elite golfer and former captain of the NYU golf team, but an entrepreneurial spirit with a penchant for learning and teaching the mental side of golf. I talked with him about his journey and his ambitions for the future, and it was very inspiring. I’m sure it will be for all of you as well. Check out the article here.

Eastside Golf Collegiate Invitational

Eastside continues to grow their influence and their reach in the world of golf, this time putting on their first ever Collegiate Invitational. Presented by State Farm, it featured high level golf, even through an unfortunate bout of bad weather.

WWT

This week’s PGA event brings us the return of resort golf, going to the El Cardinal in Mexico. Some notable names this week include Billy Andrade, playing in his first PGA Tour event in almost a decade. Wesley Bryan, who is finding a new type of fame through his Bryan Bros Golf YouTube channel, will also be teeing it up. Joel Dahmen, last week’s winner at the ZOZO Nico Ecchevaria, Luke Donald, last years WWT winner Erik Van Rooyen, and also Neil Shipley on a sponsors exemption round out some of the notables.

The Match: Superstars

I talked about The Match: Superstars on my Instagram yesterday, but for those out of the loop, this is an entirely brand new version of The Match that will be pre recorded, not played live, and broadcast over two days. Instead of pro golfers, we have a lineup of A-listers and elite athletes going at each other, first in teams of two, then match play singles for the semi finals and finals. Bill Murray and Wayne Gretzky vs. Charles Barkley and Ken Griffey Jr. Michale Phelps and Mark Wahlberg vs. Nate Bargatze and Blake Griffin. No matter how good the golf is, this event promises to be, if anything, absolute hilarity. With people like Ernie Johnson and Bubba Watson on the call, analysis should be just as entertaining as the conversations between teams. And, don’t forget about The Grudge Match, PGA Tour vs. LIV. Rory Mcilroy and Scottie Scheffler vs. Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. This cataclysmic golf event takes place December 17, while The Match: Superstars will be broadcast on November 21-22.

Fall Season 2

Over the last week, we had a few companies drop the 2nd release of their fall collections, and they did not disappoint. A lot of natural vibes this year, especially with Quiet Golf and Metalwood. Also a special shoutout to the second drop of the Malbon x Beams Golf collection. The designs on these pieces go really hard.

Weekly Advisors

This comes from my guy Shawn, a really cool cat and a phenomenal golfer. A player his whole life, he mentioned to me the other day what he believed to be the best golf advice he’s ever heard. Well, I happen to agree, and it’s something that everyone needs to hear.

You’re not good enough to get that mad

Read it a few times. If it’s as impactful to you as it was to me, congrats, you’re on your way to improving your mental game and becoming a much better golfer. If you think it’s bullshit, read it again.

Course of the Week

Course of the week this week is Granada Golf Course, not just an absolutely beautiful 9-hole in the heart of Coral Gables, but also the oldest operating 9-hole course in Florida. The course is not difficult, with wide fairways and large greens, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing to challenge you. Bunkers are placed very strategically and always right around the green, trees larger than houses line a lot of the fairways, and be wary of the left side; it runs alongside a mansion-lined road for the entirety of the track. My first ever rounds of golf were played here, and as a lefty slicer, I had a lot of very, very close calls. Beloved by the community, there have been disputes with the city of Coral Gables over renovations and the future of the course. I will be releasing an article to discuss all of this soon.

Stories from the Sticks

This week’s story also comes from Shawn. Him telling me that quote reminded me of a story he had told me in the past, and among all the crazy golf stories he told me, this one stood out the most. As a teenager, he shot even par at Pebble Beach completely barefoot. I mean, if you ever need proof that grounding is real, here it is. Talk about pure. Get this man barefoot on a sponsors exemption and you have no idea what can happen!

Stupid Golf Story

This week’s stupid golf story goes to my guy who I played with at Granada last week, a single paired with me and my two friends. We all go to hit, and we all hit very meh drives, so it is now our new playing partner’s turn. He steps up, looking like he knows what he’s doing, which is a relief, and rips one down the middle. It looked great until it didn’t as it started turning left, and hard. It careened over into the street, took two gigantic hops, and gave a nice little smack to the side of a car driving by. It sounded like this; hop ohhhhh hop ohhhhhh DOINK YOOOOOOOOOO. Was amazing. Granada never disappoints.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s edition! Stay tuned to the Weekenders Weekly YouTube channel for on course content coming soon, as well as a new giveaway announcement in the next few days. As the PGA Tour ramps up, as well as TGL, we will be here to cover it and make sure you’re up to date on all the happenings in pro golf as well as on the streets. Weekenders Weekly got you. Have a great Tuesday and go play some golf!
