TGL Inaugural Night

The inaugural night of TGL promised to bring golf into the future, infusing it with technology and angles and excitement never before seen. As for me, all I wanted was a good time, and I walked away with that and more. For how crazy it seemed on TV, it was much wilder in person. Check out the in depth article on my experience here.

FL VS LA Preview

We’re in for a big treat tonight as the Flawda Boys of Jupiter Links Golf Club take on the lethal lineup of LA GC. Even though LA is missing their smoothest swinger in Tommy Fleetwood, Colin is coming to capitalize on his recent results, marking a 2nd place finish in the Sentry a week and a half ago. Sahith is definitely going to enjoy the vibes while Justin Rose will be a refined anchor to help keep the team grounded, especially important for the mixed format of TGL. While I’ll take the Jupiter squad any day of the week, this is going to be a tough one. While Jupiter probably has the most enthusiastic and energetic team in the league (please let us hear their mics in person tonight), LA is just playing some better golf right now. Not by a lot, but they are.

It will be interesting to see a veteran heavy team go up against a team a majority of younger guys, at least in toinght’s lineup. That being said, who knows how Tiger will play, or even Kisner, without the added physical stress of tournament play. While I noted early on the team’s are picked seemingly a bit eclectically, Tiger’s team seems clearly handpicked by him. It is, in my opinion, the most complete team in TGL, with everyone having a clear role in the team. Kevin Kisner man. Might become an easy fan favorite early on, let’s see how the golf holds up though. While it’s hard for me to say who’s going to be the winner so early on, even though LA’s golf game makes me nervous, I will say this; if it comes down to the singles portion, and the match is on the line, I know who I’m taking all day 🐅.

Cactus Jack x Nike Golf

Nike has been about their shit. Since their Tiger days, Nike has never been afraid to push the boundaries of golf, maybe not as much as some of these newer brands, but for a legacy brand, they've always liked to experiment. Multiple years ago now, we saw the release of the NOCTA golf collection, where Drake’s Nike arm released a full capsule of golf clothing and accessories. To this day, the sunglasses are some of the best I’ve used for golf. We’ve already seen a Travis Scott Jordan golf shoe, but new photos from the Reggie Jackson and Travis Scott celebrity golf tournament show off an entire capsule of Cactus Jack golf products. From pants to polos, it utilizes the constant colors of his collections like brown, tan and green, and the use of both the Nike swoosh and the Cactus Jack logo is a great touch. Multiple logos on polos, done right, is slowly becoming one of my favorite design aspects. While all we know about this collection is from these photos, expect these clothes to drop within the next few months, or at least some sort of collection. While I wouldn’t put it past Nike to create a whole bunch of exclusives for a tournament of this caliber, I also can’t put it past them to miss out on the media and purchasing firestorm this collaboration would create.

That polo goes hard.

lowercase bags

Today marks a really cool day in golf as it sees the Kickstarter launch of a product that I am not only genuinely excited for, but also honestly annoyed that it was not released years sooner. lowercase bags is a new type of golf bag that looks and acts like a backpack. Its design is that of a traditional book bag, with laptop pockets and nice shiny zippers, but can your backpack securely hold 8 clubs along with all your belongings? No more are the days of trying to triangulate a carry bag under the corners of your desk, or fighting to remember exactly what you took out last time that made your bag light enough to carry the 25 blocks to the range. And, for those looking for a new approach to their driving range commute as much as an easier one, the bag is even designed to be attached to the side of a bike. Now that, sounds like a phenomenal afternoon.

I first met Zach and the bag itself on a chilly afternoon outside of Grand Central, which I’ve talked about before, and will definitely mention again in our interview dropping soon (!) Since then, I’ve been able to see the brand grow and the bag shrink (the launch version is 1 pound lighter than the prototype I wore), and I’m really excited that a day has come where the bag can be supported and subsequently purchased. As a dual city dweller and bike rider, I’m excited to get my lowercase to use and abuse. I love taking my laptop to Chelsea Piers in NYC to sit down and work after a range session; now I can take everything in one bag, with two comfortable straps. And, I can finally live out my dream of biking to the driving range in Miami. I’m not even kidding, I’ve always wanted to do it, but a golf bag on a bike sounds like a nightmare. lowercase bag is really that dope, and their are tons of people who will find a way to incorporate it into their daily lives. Functionality aside, they killed it with the design and materials as well, ensuring the bag looks sleek yet also can protect your clubs on the move. Check out their website and Instagram if you’re interested in seeing what all this fuss is about, and for the real ones, find the Kickstarter here.

Cofounder Zach in the field.

Weekly Advisors

I’m shaking things up a bit. Recently, I have been trying out new mental strategies around the course that have led me to shoot some of my lowest scores ever. In talking about these topics to my friends, they have helped me refine these ideas and become something that we can all utilize to get better. Weekly advisors will be come more personal, and I promise, more effective.

We are going to start with a very wide lens and move down smaller and smaller as the week’s go on. I’m talking eagle’s eye view all the way till we’re talking about grass. Wide angle first. The funniest part about golf, is that at the end of the day, it really is not that complicated. Nothing changes between swings. It’s all just a similar motion. Once again, it is the mind, usually specifically the ego, that ruins golf shots more than anything else. Even on your worst day, just take a 3 wood and bat the ball 150 yards with a half swing. Don’t even think about it. The body is the friend (not the arms) the mind is the enemy. Just hold the club and swing, man. Serious. Any more thoughts about it while you’re playing a round, you’re fucked.

Course of the Week

This course of the week goes to Park Ridge, a gnarly course on the outskirts of West Palm Beach. While at first glance it seems more odd than anything, the more you familiarize yourself, the better it gets. Right off the bat, driving up to the parking lot is about 50 feet of elevation. For my Florida people, you know that is nuts. The craziness doesn’t even get close to stopping there. The course is recent, built only in 2004, and was built on an old decommissioned landfill. Yes, a mount trash-more style landfill, the large green mounds off the highway that usually hide trash, this one hides 18 fairways, tee boxes, and greens. Immediately once you see the course, you look out on this wild elevated landscape of golf, somehow flat yet hilly at the same time. It plays almost like a wide open links course, then all of a sudden you have an 80 yard elevation drop to a green 150 yards away. Crazy fire, and almost unheard of in Florida.

Besides the course, the clubhouse is great, a classic style grille with a beautiful patio overlooking 18 (so underrated) that serves cheap beer and cheap dogs, both with expensive flavor. The range off grass, they have a dedicated putting and chipping area, and everyone working there was pleasant as could be. Pro tip: the town it is located in, Wellington, FL, has the first ever Publix with a bar inside. The Clublix, baby. Go have a day!!

Stories from the Sticks

I know I mention him a lot, but there are seriously not many people better than The Connected Golfer when it comes to translating very heady yet important mental game topics in a digestible and fun manner. Since the turn of the new year, he has been going even harder with content that encompasses the elite mentality one must have to play golf and even build their life at a high level. Full on confidence in your skills and abilities, even false confidence, will force you to do amazing things you thought you could never accomplish. He releases these gems constantly, and his mix of information, entertainment, and lighthearted seriousness make his account a cornerstone in developing golfers, whether elite or amateur. He is always finding new ways to improve and look at golf through a different lens, which is one of the hardest yet valuable things to do with this crazy sport. For your golf and life needs, please check out his Instagram.

Stupid Golf Story

This week’s stupid golf story goes to the kids who decided it would be a fun idea to hang around and go up to the 13 or so foot crocodile that lives in the murky waters of Deering Bay. While we were driving up the fairway, a group of about 6 teens walk out from behind the trees and right down the middle of the short grass. This is annoying enough, but doing so to go play games with a gigantic reptile. Yeah, sounds like they’re going to win some stupid prizes. Fortunately, they scrammed the moment his tail moved an inch.

Oh boy.

I hope you enjoyed this fun edition of Weekenders Weekly! TGL is seriously shaping up to become something to look forward to, whether for the golf, the tech, or the overall excitement about all the craziness going on. Weekly advisors will start to become more and more important in WW and hopefully my reader’s golf games. I promise, I’m onto some really cool, helpful stuff. lowercase bags to the moon!
