PGA Show
The PGA is the yearly gathering for golfing professionals, media, and brands to all come together and showcase their newest stuff. This year, I’m predicting that we will be seeing a lot more clothing brands than usual, so it will be interesting to compare quality on a large scale. I also think we will be seeing a lot of products that integrate tech into our golf game in new ways. New type of yardage trackers, new types of camera and mic set ups. Of course, my friends at lowercase bag will be there as well!
TGL
Tonight marks the first time Atlanta Drive GC will be suiting up as well as the first time that we will see a TGL team return for the second time. After the thrashing that NYGC took on opening night, it will be interesting to see how a team adjusts and rebounds in a sport like TGL. Did they put a lot of thought and strategy into it, or are we not at that stage yet with this league? Time will tell. It also is the first ever matchup for Atlanta Drive GC, with Lucas Glover sitting out tonight. This leaves JT, Horschel, and Patty Ice to take on a Rickie-less NYGC, with Cam Young taking his place on the roster. I think that it will be a great matchup especially since NYGC has played TGL already but has a lot left to prove so soon into the season.
YouTube News
There have been an insane amount of big moves in YouTube the past few weeks, here are a few.
Grant Horvat, who left Good Good last year to pursue his individual career, signed with Takomo only for irons, a deal including equity in the company. He is still a Taylormade athlete for drivers, woods, and hybrids. LAB putters, Primo apparel. That goes to show his value.
The Bryan Brothers Wesley and George recently also got a Takomo equity deal, leaving all three of these guys as owners of the company
Micah Morris, who left Good Good with Grant, has just joined Titleist in an all encompassing deal
Weekly Advisors
This past weekend, I experienced for the first time in a while what it is like to have no feel with a wedge, and it was garbage through and through. As my wedge swing got worse and worse I realized that there was a key component missing, one that probably causes people to jerk when they’re putting. Hips have got to be used in chipping and putting almost identical to how they’re used in the long game. It can be easy to get too stable and become stuck in a chipping and putting stroke, causing an armsy swing that would produce a slice or pull with any other longer club.
Course of the Week
This week’s course of the week is the Hammock Course at Ocean Reef. First of all, the course is kept up to a ridiculous degree, I think that it is probably the nicest conditions in all of South Florida. There is just a complete lack of dirt around the greens, no patches of anything on the fairway, bunkers are pristine, and the greens roll like glass. The course has water but a lot less than most other Florida spots. It plays a lot like a narrow Crandon, with holes covered on the side by mangroves while others are wider than a football field. It is a great mix of variety in the tee shots and the approaches, and the par 3’s are all fun, yet not too difficult.
I hope you enjoyed this edition of Weekenders Weekly! There will be a lot more details to share next week regarding the PGA Show, I’m excited to see what products and people are there walking around! TGL continues to improve and I have really enjoyed all I’ve seen so far. In the coming weeks, Weekenders Weekly will be undergoing some tweaks and refinement, I’m really excited to show you guys what I’m cooking up. Until then, I hope you’ve been enjoying the content, the newsletters, and the giveaways, with a new one being announced this week! Thanks for tapping in, see you next week, go play some golf!
