Weekenders Weekly 037

Portrush, Puttwell, and Puttbuddies

Welcome back, Weekend Warriors!

This week, we’re taking our first stab at a refined, neatly sectioned newsletter, dedicated to not just product releases, but community moments and noteworthy news from the pro world and beyond. For the first selection, revisit the first ever article I published, already three years ago, which is an overview of the first collection between Kith and Taylormade. Beyond that, get a quick grasp on this week’s major, check out some hot releases, and check out some of the newest offerings from the sponsors.

I hope you enjoy!

Revisiting Kith x Taylormade

3 years on from the first drop between Kith and Taylormade, and 3 years since my first ever published article, take a look back at this capsule through the lens of the golf world as it was 3 years ago.

Tour Credentials

What: The 153rd Open Championship

Where: Royal Portrush

When: July 17 - 20

Our yearly European major has finally arrived, with this year’s Open Championship taking place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. I absolutely love links golf and the history of this tournament is up there with the most legendary in any sport. The last time it was held here, Irishman Shane Lowry was the winner, with Tommy Fleetwood serving as runner up. Will the Weekenders Weekly fan favorite finally get his day? He has been playing great recently, even after the choke job at Travellers, and with his previous success here, I have my fingers crossed.

Oakley Observations

Oakley celebrated their 50th anniversary a few days ago with all the hectic, brutalist, and futuristic events and marketing you would expect. Performances from Travis Scott, athletes galore in everything from Sutros to X-Metals, the headquarters event looked like a blast. But, consumers can still be a part of the celebration with the special edition Ellipse glasses. Meant to look like iconic Oakley logo, the glasses unique sloping frame smooths out into a stem with the shape and material reminiscent of an Eye Jacket, which sticks to my face like no other sunnies. This special edition colorway comes in a black body and frame with all-over gold spackle, looking like a starry night with its reflectiveness. The gold lens, with 50 etched all the way on the side, has a hidden nose piece and one-piece construction that lends itself to a futuristic pair of ski goggles reimagined as eye glasses. This model is as spacey and ultramodern as the promo pics would suggest, and it is a perfect way to help Oakley celebrate the end of their 5th decade in operation. Find this pair online right here.

Curated Drops

Nike Golf “The Open”

Nike dropped a beautiful pack of shoes for this year’s Open, as they have for the other 3 majors of the year, although this one might be the best of the bunch. All three models feature similar silvery black accents across a white base, with hints of yellow and orange to go with the all over textured print. It reminds me of the sides of a pot bunker, or the pebbley shores of a links course. All three models drop on July 17.

TravisMathew x Guinness

Wow. Nothing says Ireland like some Guinness, and TravisMathew took that concept and ran with it, releasing a very special edition of their Daily Pro Plus model in collaboration with the legendary Irish beer company. It’s black with gold accents design looks like a royal pint splashed across the upper, and the gold heel loop with “Guinness” emblazoned right on it is a bit of flash that clashes nicely with the design underfoot. The colorway would go perfect with those Oakleys. The two brands also collaborated on a putter cover, but it is only available with a purchase of the shoes, a big win for anyone buying the shoes, and a big loss for anyone who just wants the putter cover. Nevertheless, find the sneakers online right here.

Bold Golf x Miura Golf

Bold Golf, the heavily expressive and bespoke Irish golf brand has collaborated with Miura, a Japanese brand of equal quality and craftsmanship, on a collection of handcrafted bags that blend the feelings of tradition, dedication, and artistic prose. Each bag releases large Miura branding, Japanese lettering and designs, and a mix of red and cream coloring that plays off and against each other from product to product. Each bag is sold out except for the limited edition, 1 of 1 artist original, a series that Bold Golf has been doing for some time. This hand painted bag is in collaboration with artist Corrin James, who hand painted an unbelievable design that makes this bag more than just a product, but an art piece in of itself. Very very cool collaboration I hope to see return. Check the bags out for yourself right here.

Puma x AC Milan

AC Milan, the official Serie A team of Weekenders Weekly (seriously, they’re one of my favorite teams) has dropped a collaborative capsule with Puma Golf, a brand that has consistently surprised me this year with their golf products. In 6 months, I went from owning 0 Puma products to 2 pairs of pants, 3 polos, and a hat. The Arnold Palmer collab was great, the Realtree collection was heavily underrated, and their pants are my new go-to, all products of great quality and great price. In fact, the AC Milan jersey I have is made of proprietary Puma material that makes it lighter than most jerseys I own in any sport. This collection doesn’t just bring on courses staples like the green and white polos, black pants with the red AC Milan accents (!), and a towel and shoes, but also really dope off course wear like t-shirts and hoodies. The “AC Milan Golf Club” script and motif may not be the most original design of all time, but it is definitely beautiful, and lends itself to the vibe of the drop. With sizes already selling out, one can assume this will only be the first of many collaborative releases between golf brands and football clubs in general. Find the collection online here.

Puttwell Accessory Drop

Puttwell Golf, after killing it with their most recent clothing drop in Spring, has dropped a medium size collection of accessories for the course, each bringing a cheeky Puttwell vibe to their sleek design and colors. Many head covers, for drivers, mallets, blades, and even the halfblade designs like a Rossie get their own cover. These come in the black with white accents, simple yet classy, or white and green accents, brighter yet flush with classic golf style. A two-pack of ball markers release in classic size and paint-filled metal, each featuring reversible sides and different variations of the Puttwell logo. This is alongside the larger ball marker, which is the style that sits inside of a larger disc. We love those as well. Lastly are the multicolored putting disks, to add a bit of flair to those times when the putting green is packed, and the mini towel, with the two-sided, two-tone design featuring both the classic Puttwell logo and on the other side, my favorite, “Know Your Roll.”, a Puttwell staple. Another drop, another batch of wins for the only-growing golf brand. Find your favorites right here.

Puttbuddies

PuttBuddies, the legends of licensing themselves, have been killing it recently with their SpongeBob divot tools and markers. Moving past just the main crew, there are many classic characters on the site, like the Flying Dutchman, Handsome Squidward, and Barnacle Boy. Not to mention the sick head covers, as well as the unbelievable towel designs. They are utterly creative, and I hope they come back in stock soon. Check them out here, and make sure to use code WW15 for 15% off!

VannyVee Sports

VannyVee Sports brought a bit of much needed lighthearted fun to the golf world with their animal character tee holders, a product I saw at the PGA Show in January and have been following ever since. With both the Eagle and Gator Caddy spending time on my bag this year, I have loved the pop of creativity and functionality it brings to my bag. While it isn’t the Safari Koala Caddy I was hoping for (one day), they have released the a look at the 5th design in their lineup, the Canadian Caddy. A polo bear sporting a hockey jersey, red cap, and some nice kicks, I think I may have to take this guy south of the border and give him some time in the Miami sun. It’s a great design that only builds on the creativity of the original four characters. Shop the four caddies here, the 5th one drops next month, and use code WW15 for 15% off!

Song of the Week

PBT- Travis Scott, Tyla, Vybz Kartel

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Weekenders Weekly! As I continue to refine the newsletter, make sure to stay tuned to socials as pieces of the newsletter begin to populate on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube more than before. Also stay tuned to YouTube as once a week, I will be bringing a podcast-style interview as well as an on-course playing video. Also, wait till you see what I have planned for “Stories from the Sticks” a section that has been at Weekenders from the very start. It was a busy week in the golf world this week, and after a major weekend, it usually gets busier. Only over a month to go until the Ryder Cup! Until next week, blast that Vybz Kartel, and go play some golf.
