Etnies, Happy Gilmore, and Superman!

Welcome back, Weekend Warriors! We got some great products for you in this one, and a really cool story on Happy Gilmore! Be sure to keep an eye out on YouTube for some great new videos on the way!

I hope you enjoy!

Did Happy Gilmore 2 just solve the PGA Tour and LIV Dispute?

Okay, while there may still be some ground to cover in that area, there were some certain moments in Happy Gilmore 2 that just years ago, would have been impossible to execute. It was a no brainer to use the entire LIV Golf debacle as a large plot point, and I thought they executed on it well, I loved the use of Manatee to make fun of “The Shark." Having Bubba talk about upstart leagues while wearing his LIV team’s polo was hilarious, but I think the funniest part of the entire movie was the team up in the final act. I was really surprised how much screen time the best golfers in the world got; it honestly showed me a level of fun and character from them that even YouTube can’t produce. And, to have Rory and Scottie playing alongside Bryson and Brooks for the fate of the “PGA Tour” is just hilarious. Just a few years ago, it seemed as if these guys were bitter enemies, and now they’re on screen joking alongside each other. Yes, there have been many public moments over the last year or two that show a higher level of ubiquity among pro golfer’s mindset about the whole LIV-PGA debacle, and on most fronts the only thing stopping a merger is legislation. But, Happy Gilmore 2 proved that beyond all the controversies that LIV brought about to the world of pro golf, the spirit of golf itself is strong enough to survive and bring it all back together.

Oakley Observations

The Oakley Plantaris is one of Oakley’s coolest recent models, with the removable nose-guard and frog leg stems giving it a distinct futuristic look and high-quality function. It’s been apart of most of Oakley’s capsules this year, like the Seek collection, but on July 31st, it get’s it’s own special model that draws from Oakley’s past designs as much as it does from it’s future ambitions. The Plantaris TI introduces titanium construction to the iconic shape, giving it a higher level of protection and durability, when it already had a high level of that already. It’s not just a functional choice, but also a design idea that calls back to the X-Metal Oakley days, and creates a look that introduces a bit of brutalism into the normally quite sleek and futuristic Plantaris frame. It’s a lovely tweak to a fantastic design, and I’m excited for these to drop tomorrow.

Malbon x Etnies

Leave it to Malbon Golf once again to infuse parts of popular culture into golf that otherwise would have just never been present, to the degree where I have to do research on the origins and creators of their products. Sal Barbier is a legendary skateboarder who didn’t just pioneer many skate tricks and industry facets, but skate shoes themselves, creating his own company and own designs that still hold precedence to this day. Etnies, his company, is most famous for the SAL 23, his shoe, which I feel stupid calling a great design because it was made in 1993 and is still getting made today; pretty obvious that people love it, and it’s obvious why. The model’s shape, detailing, and angles all work together to create scenes of movement on a static piece, stitching falls across itself like decks on a railing, the toe popping up off the ground like it’s in a constant brace for impact. Malbon, in their culturally transparent ways, has brought this shoe to the course, once again bridging the gap between skate and golf, and helping infuse golf with cultural aspects from other forms of expression. Spikeless traction, leather upper, and the classic Malbon scripting and details we all know and love. Once again, a beautiful fusion of passion and creativity impacting the sport of golf in ways that were impossible just mere years ago. Love to see it.

Nothing But Cup Eastside

If you know my writing, you know for years I have pushed the narrative of the many similarities, culturally, mentally, and physically, between golf and basketball. It’s a notion that appeared to me when I first started playing five years ago, and I believe the connection between the two sports has only grown stronger since then. Eastside Golf believes this too, show clearly with the release of their most recent capsule, Nothing But Cup. The beautiful graphic is blown up, barely fitting on the head covers, evoking the fluid energy and motion of basketball, and the satisfaction of swishing whether a tough three or a long putt. It’s shown in full in the ball marker, the perfect pocket token to have that combines the two beautiful games. The collection ducks out of golf for a second and gives us classic style wristbands and headbands, in a nice sleek black, featuring both the Swingman logo and the classic Eastside Golf script. Not a large collection, but one that captures the enormous shared ideas of basketball and golf in just one awesome graphic.

Metalwood Studio Dominoes

These have been out for a while, but Metalwood recently brought back a lot of their products, including a set of dominoes that they sweetly call the “Bag-O-Bones”. Being from Miami, dominoes have a special place in my heart, so to see the Metalwood interpretation of a classic domino bag is awesome. The purple paint color they picked is perfect, and their high quality paint fill works on both the logos and the dots and lines. It even comes with a scoring notebook and a branded mini-marker. Awesome stuff.

PuttBuddies Superman Tease

PuttBuddies man, they’ve done it again. The undisputed KINGS of licensing have dropped the first tease of their upcoming collection, and it’s a doozy.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… nope, it’s just a head cover from PuttBuddies upcoming Superman collection! With their penchant for high quality tools and markers, elite paint fills, and crazy designed towels and headcovers, this collection is sure to enter the golf world with a Kryptonian bang.

Lowercase Bags

Don’t sound the alarm just yet ladies and gentlemen, but we are very, very close. The first batch of lowercase bags has landed in the states and made its way to lowercase HQ. In just a few short days, the bags will be in our hands for the first time, and I for one cannot wait. I’ve been waiting for these to launch ever since I skidded to a stop on an NYC street corner to ask where this beautiful invention came from. Much more to come on these beauties, especially once I get mine!

Stories from the Sticks

Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps are the greatest to ever do what they did, and I’m not. But, if you believe that you are, then you’re almost as good as being that.
