Big Brands keep Blatantly Ripping off Smaller Creators
This is becoming a very bad trend, and I hate to use that word, but unfortunately there have been multiple instances of this happening recently. It seems that the genuine originality and creativity of a lot of these newer brands is scaring some of the big box golf companies and their marketing teams. Yet, instead of working harder to be more creative, using their resources to their advantage, they are taking things from smaller brands and creators and using them for themselves. Seriously, seriously lame. Look below.
Gumtree Golf and Nature
The first and most famous happening. Under Armor, in a last ditch effort to have some kind of skin in the golf apparel game (they really don’t) full on copied the script, color scheme, and overall idea from Gumtree Golf and Nature’s bird watching inspired collections. They even recreated some shots from Gumtree’s marketing scheme. Sad, sad play by Under Armor. Stick to the Curry.

NYC Golf Sicko Hat
The absolutely beloved Dan Rapaport, every person’s absolute favorite golf personality, decided to release a very bland hat with the words “golf sicko” not emblazoned, but very minutely stamped on the front in a way too small arial font. Don’t worry, they have an italicized version as well. How interesting of him to release this hat only a short while after the my friend Course Maps restocked his NYC Golf Sicko Hat, which carries twice the character and thrice the meaning as this one does. Gotta walk the talk, not just talk the walk.

Hoops and Birdies
Oh boy. This one stings bad. Like, very, very infuriating. As I’ve mentioned many times, my initial foray into researching the layers and machinations of golf, beyond just the enjoyment of the sport, was by looking at it through the lens of basketball. I wrote a ten page paper on the similarities of the sport, yada yada I’ll link it right here. One of my favorite creators, TeeUpKickswithChris, has an awesome page called Hoops and Birdies, which I love. He takes that same mindset I have about the two sports to create awesome visuals and products. Look, it’s cool Austin Reaves is getting a golf collection, good for him. What’s not cool is that collection blatantly using Chris’s logo. All the money and people in the marketing department and they had to go an outright steal the logo from someone else? Just wild. The slogan is eerily similar as well, although it’s a bit different and reminiscent of their collaboration with Bauer hockey. But, this is yet another instance cutting corners and lowering morality instead of putting in the work and creativity.

While Travis “Snatch and Grab” Mathew is probably the most infuriating one on this terrible list, this one is the most ridiculous for sure. Also, the fact that it’s Charlie Woods after an ace and that this shirt isn’t for sale at all makes it in a way, hilarious. SSC and Quiet Golf came together for a super sick polo a few months ago, the Patio Polo, and the design and fit made it quickly become one of my most used shirts. Seemingly, Sun Day Red feels the same way, and decided to make a polo that is basically the exact same design, just thicker stripes, and the same colors, just in different places. While partially funny, I really didn’t expect to see this from a brand like Sun Day Red, and while they do have some unique shoes and throwback polo designs, I feel like SDR could be so much more unique than they are. The Patio Polo is unique, I had never seen a polo color blocked like that before. SDR, you can be better.

Oakley Observations
Last week saw the release of the Oakley and Undefeated Plantaris, a beautiful blue hued pair of frames that sold out in minutes online, and is most definitely a challenge to still find in stores. Without missing a beat, they’ve announced a new pair of collaborative Oakley’s dropping this week, a pair of MUZM Straight Jacket 99 in a white tiger stripes colorway. These badass frames made their return to shelves for the first time since their initial release a few short months ago, so it’s pretty cool to see Oakley already willing to let brands take these iconic models for collaborations. Then again, it is Undefeated.
Expect these to release on Thursday at 11 AM.

Sneak of the Week
Check out these absolute beauties from Nomad Customs, whose hand has touched the shoes of everyone from Ray Allen to Rickie Fowler to DJ Khaled. They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) - Pete Rock and CL Smooth
Unfortunately, this was the saddest edition of WW to date. So many good people I know are suffering at the hands of these big brands instead of being able to be lifted up and celebrated in larger circles for their work. Times will change. Until then, we just have to go harder!
