Weekenders Weekly 046: PGA Show

We're so back, as is everyone else, with thousands of golfers descending upon Orlando for this year's PGA Show! This week is unlike any other in the world of golf, so expect the next few days to be jam packed with great info!

Welcome back, Weekend Warriors!

Been a while, right? As the great Tyler Herro once said, “Slow motion is better than no motion”, and while you may not have seen me on your screens so much as of late, rest assured that a lot is being done behind them. But, I’m happy to be back at the forefront for this year’s PGA Show, which brings every creator, club maker, clothing brand, country club, and insane character under one mile long roof. Yeah, the Orange Country Convention Center is truly a spectacle in of itself, but it’s the absolute commotion going on inside that is the true gem.

Keep reading for a bit of an insight into what to expect for this year’s show.

I hope you enjoy!

O-Town Classic

Gold Links Golf Club and the Social Golf Association joined forces to kick this week off right with the O-Town Classic tournament, which put good vibes and great people at the forefront, and of course, some good golf played throughout. With both organizations already known for their amazing events and tournaments, it was a no brainer that a collaboration between the two would just take their already copious amounts of vibes and take them to a different level. Not to mention, my friend and absolute legend Five Points Golf was the official apparel sponsor, bringing out some awesome custom pieces for the tourney. For those at the show, make sure to tap in with all three orgs. They’re all pushing the needle hard as hell, and coming together for the tourney puts the whole golf world on notice.

Oakley

Oakley had an amazing booth last year, chock full of rare sunglasses and copious amounts of color ways. I expect this year to be an even stronger show of force, mainly with the addition of the Oakley Meta to the lineup and its big push into golf. I am looking forward to potentially trying them for the first time come tomorrow, and I am very, very excited to bring back Oakley Observations with a big jump start, given all of the potential new products on display.

Chamelo

Another sunglasses brand, these are completely unique with their manually adjustable tinted lenses, and after lots of R&D, Chamelo has found an actual performance application for golf not just in those lenses, but in the shape of the frames as well. I have also never tested these, and even if the lens change is more of a style feature than a practical application, I think that alone is worth a look. Imagine being able to change the tint level based on your outfit, or if you are inside or outside of a restaurant or bar. Add golf functionality on top of that, and it sounds like we have something special on our hands.

PuttBuddies

I really admire PuttBuddies for many reasons; the high quality of their products, especially the paint, their attention to the little details for so many characters, and their aggressive licensing that has given them access to some of the most iconic modern pop culture characters. I’ve always been happy to have been one of their affiliates, and I am really excited to catch up with them again at their first ever booth, and a big, beautiful booth at that. I’m sure they have a lot up their sleeve for this show, and I am really looking forward to seeing what they have in the pipeline.

Nike

Last year, the Swoosh made their return to the show for the first time in 5 years, and while they showed off so many new items, silhouettes, and styles, we are about at the end of all those products. With the return of the shield logo, Brooks returning to the PGA, and Tony Finau moving to Jordan, I am hoping that they will come out swinging, especially as they try to invade the space occupied by brands like Malbon, Eastside, Manors, etc. Malbon and Eastside had amazing booths last year and this year will only be bigger and better and I will cover them tremendously. But, all eyes are on Nike as they try and find their true voice in this modern era of golf. I also hope to see a section for Jordan, who went through their own mini-rebrand about ten months ago.

Sun Day Red

I don’t have to say much else. SDR had the potential to be a complete flop, being unoriginal and just using Tiger as an inspiration, but the level of detail that goes into the products and their construction as well as the actual input of Tiger on a high level has led the brand to a comfortable space where their clothing performs while looking sleek and having many options, not to mention some cheeky retros that they should really do more of. I’ve enjoyed every SDR piece I’ve gotten, and I really hope that as we see an evolution of the shoes, we also see the brand evolve and try to dive deeper into the past of Tiger rather than running away from it (cough cough Jordan Brand).

HEAD Golf x TSG

My friend The Silent Golfer has been, genuinely, silently working on some of the coolest products I am aware of in golf, whether announced or not. His craftsmanship has brought to my hands some of the best markers and divots I have ever used, and his latest divot tool creation is like none I have ever seen before. I’ve teased it on my Instagram before, and I genuinely cannot wait for the grand reveal this week for all of you to see what has been quietly cooked up, especially in collaboration with a brand like HEAD. Awesome stuff all around.
